Fiction Addiction was a one-hour live new media performance that took place on 15 February 2009.

In Fiction Addiction the artist walked in the London Borough of Hackney whilst watching an episode of EastEnders, England's oldest and most popular TV soap opera, on her mobile phone. Each action within the episode was interpreted as a direction for her walk (straight, left, right, or back).

The walk began at Fassett Square – the location after which the fictional Albert Square in EastEnders was designed. In order to transport the episode to the artist’s mobile phone in real-time, a placeshifting device was used. (Placeshifting refers to watching or listening to live, recorded or stored media on a remote device, such as a computer or a mobile phone, via the Internet.)

Fiction Addiction blurs the boundaries of reality and fiction. Walking in an area used in a TV series while simultaneously looking at the TV series changes the walker’s perception. She is in two worlds at the same time – the real and the fictional world. As her navigation in the area becomes guided by (self-)imposed rules, questions arise about control and freedom, particularly in relation to the individual, the media, popular culture, and technology. Fiction Addiction was not performed in front of a live audience. Instead, a young woman watching the episode was filmed in her home, for the purpose of creating a split-screen video, showing the same action being performed in two different places and ways.
