The Walking Project is a series of live new media performances, walks that take place in various cities, often previously unvisited by the artist.
In each of the works the artist designs a set of rules determining the starting point, duration and navigation of each walk. The rules depend on the city in which the walk takes place and the art event for which it is designed. Thus, the history, architecture, culture, and geography of the city are all taken into a consideration. Most walks depend on an interaction with a remote audience (located in a gallery, public and/or virtual space), facilitated through various means of telecommunications technology.
The project explores on the one hand the aspect of human-human and human-technology interdependence and on the other hand the tension between our desire and fear of both freedom/choice and control/boundaries. It further highlights the way urban space is discovered and transformed through walking, and the way incidental data is made sustainable.
The Walking Project started in 2006, but it only fully developed in mid-2008. The project, still evolving, has so far taken place in Skopje, Tirana, Bari, London, Bradford and Belgrade as part of various art events.
